These are the three most powerful words in innovation. As you think about a problem you
want to solve, create a question that starts with “How might we…?” It will change the way you look at
the issue. Here are some questions that may stir your thinking …
Innovative Challenge Questions:
1. How might we help patients establish a positive, daily medication routine?
2. How might we use technology to make life better for disabled people?
3. How might we quickly connect newly diagnosed cancer patients to communities?
4. How might we encourage kids to take medications properly?
5. How might we improve the clinical trials experience for patients?
What to do?
After you create a “How might we” question about the problem you want to address from the
patient’s point of view, answer these four questions in a 3-minute video message:
1. What is the problem?
Describe the problem or need patients experience in your area. Be specific and
Detailed.
2. Who is affected by it?
You will find that it is more than just the patient who is affected by the problem or
need. There are family members, clinical and support staff, even the business side
of the Network including IT, Engineering, Billing, etc. Make sure you include
everyone and every department however remotely involved.
3. How is it currently solved?
Don’t just describe the current process but identify the shortcomings and
weaknesses of the problem or need you want to change. The more specific you are
the better everyone will understand and appreciate your proposed solution. Be
thorough in your explanation.
4. What makes your idea remarkable?
Now that we have an understanding of the problem, all affected by it, and how we
currently solve it, describe your innovative idea that will change a patient’s
experience in a positive and significant way. Don’t worry how far-fetched it may
seem. Be bold! Imagine what could be if we weren’t locked into a “this is how we
always did it” approach to the patient experience.
Help with your 3-minute video submission.
Start with your “How might we …?” question and then make sure you answer the four questions as
completely as possible. Include as much information as you think will be helpful for everyone to
understand the issue you want to change. Name names, list sources, identify hospitals and programs
with similar programs. The more detailed you are in your video submission, the higher the likelihood
that your idea may be adopted.
